Agriculture is the backbone of economy of the country and province covering 80% in the rural areas. The development in province is largely depends on the growth of Agriculture Sector which contribute 26% of the GDP. The erformance in Crop Sector remains satisfactory as we achieve / surpass the target of production in Kharif crop i.e. Rice, Cotton and Sugarcane. However due to shortage of water during Rabi season wheat crop target could not be achieved and decrease of 17.1% observed in production.

Sindh Agriculture Department is key player in development of agriculture in the province. It has been guiding farmers, attending to their problems and providing improved farm technologies.

Despite resource constraints, insufficient technical manpower, and inadequate inputs, including irrigation water, Sindh province has not lagged behind the other provinces in yields per hectare. In almost all major crops yield is either higher or very near to more developed province Punjab, which has proportionately more resources.

CROP SECTOR
In 2003-04, Cotton production of Sindh stands at 2.313 m. bales, Sugarcane production at 14.218 million metric tons, Rice at 1.433 million metric tons and Wheat at 2.104 million metric tons.

POLICIES / PRIORITIES ADOPTED
To meet the challenges of upcoming WTO regime efforts have been made to produce contamination free cotton. In Sindh Ghotki and Sanghar districts have been selected for the purpose.

Amendment in Cotton Control Ordinance has been made and use of Jute bag was banned, weigh bridges have been installed in most of the Ginning Factories.

In total 103,589 number of contamination free bales have been produced in Sindh.

Ghotki 62200 bales - Sanghar 41389 bales.


To enhance the export potential of fruit and to improve the quality of fruits certified nurseries have been developed at Agriculture Research Institute Mirpurkhas and distributed to farmers.

4473 plants of Mango - 1445 of Chiku
100 of Jamman - 1005 of Guava.


To curb the adulteration and supply / sale of sub-standard pesticide regular inspections and campaign has been launched.

During 2002-03 in total 695 samples were analyzed and
53 cases have been registered on account of sub-standard samples.


To promote cotton cultivation in Rice restricted areas of Jacobabad, Larkana and Shikarpur campaign has been launched and an area of 18230 hectors have been cultivated under Cotton crop.

DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Keeping in view the importance of Agriculture Sector an amount of Rs. 277.415 million has been allocated in ADP 2003-04 against revised allocation of Rs. 46.654 million during 2002-03.

Thirteen new schemes have been included in ADP 2003-04 to enhance the productivity.


PLANT PROTECTION
Two Pesticide and Fertilizer testing laboratories will be established at Mirpurkhas and Larkana.

RESEARCH
To cater the need of quality seed requirement a project for establishment of “Foundation Seed Cell by Agriculture Research Organization” has been included in ADP.

To reduce the post harvest loss and to develop technology for prevision of Fruit and Vegetable “Food Technology Laboratory” will be established at Mirpurkhas.

To educate Research exports in new technology of Geen Mutation and genetic Engineering a project will be started from 2003-04 to arrange training from National Institutes of other provinces to Research workers.

MECHANIZATION
To replace the old Bulldozers which have completed their economic life, a project for procurement of 222 Bulldozers have been approved and included in ADP.

To adopt modern technology of precision land leveling a project has been included in the ADP for procurement of 200 laser land leveling equipment.

A scheme for procurement of earth moving machinery at included in ADP to procure 20 bulldozers. These bulldozers will develop about 10000 acres of land.

WATER MANAGEMENT
Sindh On Farm Water Management Project has been cleared by PDWP for implementation through World Bank to improve 4000 Watercourses and expected to start from April 20004.

EXTENSION
Agro Export processing Zone will be established near New Fruit & Vegetable Market at Super Highway 50 Acres of land has already be purchased for the purpose construction work will be started during 2003-04.

A project for establishment of crop reporting service centers will be launched to streamline collection of statistical data.
